SUPPORT YOUR TEEN THROUGH THIS DARK TIME
How to help your teen
When a teen is dealing with bulimia, parents can make a big difference by approaching the situation with empathy, openness, and steady support. Creating a space where your teen feels safe talking (without fear of judgment) helps reduce secrecy and shame. Gently encouraging professional help, like therapy or medical care, is important, and staying involved without being overbearing can help them feel supported rather than controlled. Since bulimia often involves cycles of guilt and hiding behaviors, patience and consistency really matter. At the same time, there are things to avoid: don’t monitor or police their eating in a harsh way, don’t make comments about weight or appearance, and don’t react with anger or punishment if behaviors are discovered. These responses can push teens to withdraw further, so focusing on trust, understanding, and their overall mental health is what truly supports recovery.
