SUPPORT YOUR TEEN THROUGH THIS DARK TIME
How to help your teen
When a teen is struggling with anorexia, parents can help most by creating a calm, supportive, and non-judgmental environment where their child feels safe to open up. Listening without immediately criticizing or trying to “fix” things builds trust, while encouraging professional help (like therapy or medical support) ensures they’re getting proper care. Staying patient and consistently supportive is key, since recovery takes time. At the same time, it’s important to avoid certain behaviors: don’t comment on weight, appearance, or food choices, don’t use guilt, pressure, or ultimatums, and don’t oversimplify the issue by saying things like “just eat.” These reactions can make teens feel misunderstood or cause them to hide their struggles, so keeping the focus on their overall well-being and emotional health is what truly helps.
